We are happy to introduce the first (and final?) snapshot of Minecraft 1.11.1!!!!11oneone! This patch is mainly focused on fixing more bugs, but also contains a number of minor features just in time for the Holidays. In particular, there is a new use for the fireworks, but remember to be careful when handling explosives.

There is also a new (potentially controversial) change to the combat mechanics. Without revealing what it is, you will most definitely notice the difference when you try out the snapshot. We anticipate much feedback.

Continuing on the combat system, there is a new sword enchantment, and Mending is no longer compatible with Infinity on bows.

And finally, you can now recycle many tools and items in the furnace. The reward is minuscule but considerably better than nothing!

Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, we can’t fix it!

To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the “New Profile” button. Call it “snapshots” and check the box saying “Enable experimental development snapshots” and save. To switch to the normal version, you can select it in the dropdown at the bottom left corner of the launcher. Back up your world first or run the game on in a different folder (See the “new profile” dialog).

Snapshots can corrupt your world, please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.

Fight in a fort or toss a tuber

Ah, Friday. For many, this signals the start of two free days to kick back and play their favorite games. To help you out with that, we’ve put some new maps on Minecraft Realms for PC, and have brought back some old favorites as well. Whether you’d like to quietly admire new builds by yourself, or frenetically compete with a group of friends, we’ve got something for everyone!

Hot Potato by Team Cryus

Gather your friends and grab a potato! Hot Potato is the kind of sport where you don’t want to be left holding the ball. Keep your eyes peeled for any agitators rushing you with a spud, and if you get hit, mash your mouse until you pass it off to someone else. These are exploding tubers, so toss them before they detonate!

Vaslen by Excessed

If you’d like to start a new survival game, but don’t want to stress over building up your farms, fire up this world template. In Vaslen, you’ll find a green mesa and five cozy shacks. Just be careful, this map starts at night!

Fort Craft by goCreative

Zombies gather to attack, beginning their approach to your fort. The narrow canyon walls make it difficult for the creatures to move in groups, and from your perch in the guard tower, you line up the perfect shot. With a quiver of arrows and a bit of luck, the sun will be up before the monsters reach you.

Other additions

We have another round of 1.11 compatibility updates for you! If you haven’t played these before, give them a try. This week, the following maps make their return to Realms:

Makers Wars

We also have a special mention, for anyone that didn’t catch the Light Your Way Home blog post. The map, aptly titled Light Your Way Home, is part of the #MinecraftIRL campaign, designed to blur the lines between the real world and the crafted world. You can grab this map on Realms, under the adventure map category.

Winter is… on the way

Our next Realms content update, appropriately winter and/or holiday themed, is on December 16th! Make sure that you check in on that day for another blog post filled with all of the details.

Pocket Edition is 5 years old! Have a trailer for 1.0!

What a long way we’ve come! At its inception, Pocket Edition was little more than an experiment by mega-brained Mojang coder, Aron Nieminen. It was pretty bare bones - just the most minimal Minecrafty features in mobile form, hammered together in a mere three months.

As Aron says: “It wasn’t even supposed to have multiplayer at first, and the first internal version only had an ASCII renderer!”

It’s since grown into one of our most popular versions of Minecraft, with over 40 million players, who are now able to enjoy the rich features of redstone, join each other on Realms, and across platforms, race each other on pigback, wail on witches and - with the upcoming Ender Update - battle the ultimate boss: The Ender Dragon.

The Ender Update will bring the game version up to the big 1.0, in honour of introducing Minecraft’s complete ‘gameplay loop’, as the devs like to say. But even though we’ve brought you The End, we’re a long way from finished with Pocket Edition. We have all kinds of interesting and exciting things planned - you’ll see!

In the meantime, prepare yourself for the showdown with the Ender Dragon by watching the trailer above, and get psyched about these other 1.0 features:

World Seed Library! We’re making it even easier for you to locate weird and wonderful worlds with this curated catalogue of superior seeds.
Polar bears! Snowy biomes will now be prowled by these majestic beasts - but take care around cubs. The parents are very protective.
Music! The original soundtrack finally arrives on mobile versions of the game, having already graced Windows 10. We don’t want our jams to jam up your internet pipes though, so it’s available to download separately from the main game.
Oculus Touch support! Windows 10 players now have the option to use special VR waggle sticks to control the game! It’s well sci-fi!

Anyway, happy birthday, Pocket Edition! See you all in another five years!

Share your real-life Minecraft moments!

Hey!

Minecraft can be a funny old game. Over the years, crafters have uncovered a wealth of secrets, and developed a bunch of unique ways to play. Dirt block towers, pigs with saddles, chests packed with mushroom stew - over time, these things have become almost… normal.

For the near future, we’re celebrating some of the funkiest bits of Minecraft. Keen Facebook and Twitter users might have noticed that we’ve already created an LA installation that references the way shrewd Minecrafters use torches to light their way back home. We also uploaded a unique L.A. map to Minecraft Realms for Minecraft Java that features loads of mini-games themed around light. In case you don’t have access to a Realm we’ve also made it available to download here.

When players at the installation complete the mini-games, a huge sign gets lit up. It’s so massive that airborne travellers can read it from the sky! It’s an awe-inspiring sight, and just one of the ways we’re championing the way you play.

You’ll see a lot more of these things over the next few weeks. Follow us on Facebook or check our Twitter to keep up to date. Even better, get involved yourself! Think of some of your favorite things to do in Minecraft and re-create them in the real world. Of course, don’t do anything dangerous like putting a bucket full of lava in your backpack. That’s just dumb.

On consoles this holiday: Elytra, End Cities & more

We’ve prepared a rather spectacular seasonal gift for Console Edition. As is traditional, you’ll have to wait until late December to open up the full package, but we’re happy to give you a teeny preview today - the digital equivalent of letting you sneak downstairs and give your gift-wrapped goodies a little inquisitive shake.

That’s if you can even lift the box - this is the biggest update we’ve put out this year! There are new mobs, blocks, items, status effects and all manner of other tweaks. Here are a few of the things you might hear rattling round inside:

Elytra! Soar through The End on your freshly-minted insectoid glider, or, if you’d rather practice first, why not put your aerobatic skills to the test by generating a world with the new Amplified Terrain option?
End Cities, replete with End Ships, Chorus Plants, Chorus Flowers and Purpur blocks. Not all is as it seems, however - some blocks may conceal Shulkers, limpet-like enemies who fire homing rockets. Take a hit and you’ll take damage and experience something new, too: levitation! Elytra are essential to avoid an uncomfortable landing.
You can now use Dragon’s Breath to create Lingering Potions - throwable potions that leave a bubbling slick behind, ideal for ensnaring unwary pursuers.

There’s quite a few other stocking-fillers in there, too - but you’ll just have to wait for the free update to launch to unwrap its other mysteries!

Bop a buddy or journey through jungles

Welcome back, Minecrafters, to another Friday of PC Realms maps! Based on last week’s numbers, loads of you went nuts for A Giant Quest! We had fun stomping around and staring down the dragon as well.

Let’s get into this week’s maps!

Makers Punch by MineMakers Team

Makers Punch was a natural choice for inclusion on Realms. It was a fun and error-free minigame from the start, and it reminded us of the fan favorite, Knockback Madness, seasoned with design elements from MineMakers Team’s Makers Spleef. The goal of knocking your enemies flying off the platform is simple, but learning the jumps and items will give you an advantage as you and your friends play this game over and over.

The Lost Civilization by Blockception and Mojang

We occasionally reach out to build teams for special projects, such as the House of Horrors earlier this month. For Minecraft 1.11, we worked with Blockception to show you some of this version’s new features, and it made sense to make it available through Realms as well. So far, it’s been very popular! You can find this map under the newly-renamed World Template heading.

Hmm, upgrades!

When Minecraft gets a big update, sometimes we have to retire old maps on Realms. However, through the tireless efforts of many mapmakers, a collection of adventure maps and minigames are already back! Here’s what you can play right now:

Got time to spare? Try our Hour of Code 2016 Edition!

What could you learn in one hour? A little maths? A smattering of English? Some “science”?

Nothing of significance, basically. That’s why you should be delighted that we’ve created a second Hour of Code tutorial, designed to teach you the basics of coding in a mere 60 minutes. We introduce concepts of game design and computer science in easy-to-understand steps before giving insight into mob behavior and more. Of course, to be a master coder like Jens takes more than an hour’s training, but this is a great place to start.

Last year’s hour of code has been played over 31 million times, making it the most popular on the Code.org platform. Despite that, we’ve rebuilt the thing so it’s even better than last year’s.

Both the 2015 and 2016 tutorials are now available at code.org/minecraft so head over and give them a try. Oh, and if you’re still not convinced, watch the chirpy video below.

Seek out the Exploration Update: 1.11 on PC / Mac now!

Treasure hunters, rejoice! Update 1.11, aka the Exploration Update, has now made the treacherous journey from snapshot to full release. Our intrepid developers have scaled mighty crags of code, ventured into untamed pre-release territory and battled bugs to bring you wondrous gaming goodies!

If you haven’t got Minecraft for PC / Mac yet: you can buy it here! It’s fun and gets loads of massive, free updates like this one.

Some of these goodies may help you on your own journeys, too. 1.11 introduces the Cartographer, a new type of Villager who will exchange your spare emeralds for a map, marking the spot of certain treasure caches. But these locations won’t give up their bounty so easily! Some maps may point you to mysterious Ocean Monuments, patrolled by spiny Guardians, others to Woodland Mansions - a new location, inhabited by the Villagers’ creepy cousins: the Illagers!

These mean and miserly folk do not welcome interlopers: watch out for spells which summon toothsome traps from the floor, or conjure nasty impish foes called Vexes. Survive that, and you’ll find that the Woodland Mansion contains a rather powerful prize: the Totem of Undying. With this trinket to hand, you can face any peril without fear. Fall, and the Totem of Undying will bring you back from the abyss of death itself! Phew!

But how will you transport all your amazing loot? Perhaps saddled to a llama! These noble ruminants will form a caravan train that you lead across the land, and can be decked out with snazzy drapes. They’re pretty feisty, too, and chase off menaces with a hail of spitballs. Cool! Also, ew! Cewl?

[Update! Clever Twitter user ADHD_orc points out that llamas aren’t actually ruminants! They’re camelids. Top fact!]

If their inventory is not enough to accommodate your needs, consider packing your chattels into a Shulker Box - a special chest that retains its contents even when knocked down. Handy!

There’s loads more to discover! But you’re brave adventurers, right? Find it for yourself!
